Color accuracy and profiles
Digital screens and physical prints will never match 100% perfectly, but you can get very close. This article explains how color works in print-on-demand and what to expect from your finished products.
Why colors can look different
Colors may vary slightly because of:
- Differences in monitor calibration and brightness
- The conversion from RGB (on screen) to print profiles used in production
- Material and surface (cotton vs stainless steel vs ceramic)
- Lighting conditions when viewing the product
Small variations are normal in print-on-demand across all providers.
Best practices for accurate color
- Design using sRGB color space for the most predictable results.
- Avoid extremely bright neons and "glow" effects that can't be reproduced in standard inks or engraving.
- Increase contrast between text and background for readability.
- Order a sample of new designs, especially when color is critical.
Using reference samples
If you're building a brand around specific colors:
- ✓ Order a set of sample products to use as your color reference
- ✓ Compare new products against those samples before bulk orders
- ✓ Keep samples in consistent lighting conditions
- ✓ Document acceptable color variation ranges for your QA process
